Meet Makeup Artist Kelsey Harrison

Meet talented Makeup Artist Kelsey Harrison!

Tell our readers a little bit about yourself!
My name is Kelsey Harrison, and I am a freelance makeup artist serving the North Bay in California. My business is Makeup by Kelsey Harrison, and I can be reached through my Facebook page.

Tell us about your beauty beginnings. How and when did you fall in
love with makeup?

I first fell in love with makeup when I was about 13. My sister gave me my first few makeup products as a gift, which included these two super-sparkly eye shadows that I rocked all the time in middle school. I got so many compliments on them! Before I knew it, I was experimenting with different colors and mediums on my eyes. I found that when I used water to wet my eye shadows, they were bold and lasted longer– of course, this was before I discovered eye primer! I quickly developed my skills for my favorite look- winged eye liner. Even to this day, I still need my cat-eye with my natural look and my smokey eye!

What made you decide to be a makeup artist? How long have you been
working as a makeup artist?

I actually never really decided to become a working freelance makeup artist until after high school, but I was always giving my friends makeovers and doing makeup for dances and whatnot. I just never thought about making it my career until after I graduated- somehow it never crossed my mind that I could make a living doing what I love! Currently, I have been a freelance makeup artist for about two years, and in that time, I have done makeup for brides, fashion shows, dances, and print work.

How did you hear about Dinair?

I first heard about Dinair about six months ago when I decided that I needed to add some foundation to my kit to offer to my clients. I did my research, and everything I read and all the videos I watched pointed me in the direction of Dinair. Little did I know how truly awesome they were! I even signed up to receive their Pro Discount, which really helped me get started, monetarily!

What are your favorite Dinair products to use?

I have to say my absolute favorite product- so far- is the foundation! I use the glamour foundations, and I LOVE how user-friendly their colors are! They make it so easy to mix and match to find every person’s perfect color match- which is fantastic considering everyone has a very unique skin tone!

How has Dinair and airbrush makeup benefited you professionally?

Dinair has benefited me immensely, and has grown my business! Before I offered airbrush foundation, I was only able to use clients’ own foundation, and I didn’t feel like a true makeup artist. Now that I have Dinair foundations on my side, I am able to offer every bride, model, and prom attendee that perfect, flawless face that everyone desires!

How has airbrush makeup changed your beauty routines, personally and
professionally?

Using airbrush foundation is such a new idea- especially if you are used to using regular brushes for your foundation. By using an airbrush system, it eliminates the brush strokes that sometimes appear on your face, and also eliminates the use of regular brushes. It has made my routine so much faster and simpler- and my clients love the relaxing feeling of cool air and mist.

What are some of the most outrageous beauty projects you have
completed using Dinair professionally?

I have used my Dinair system in so many ways since I first received it in December of 2011. Most recently, I used it to give my models flawless skin for a fashion show benefiting the American Diabetes Association in Healdsburg, CA. It was so much fun, and having my Dinair system with me sparked many questions from the models, and I was able to introduce them to the brand!

What do you find to be the most common mistakes women make with makeup?

I find the most common mistake women make when wearing makeup is using foundation with the wrong undertone for their skin. You have three basic categories when it comes to skin undertones- warm (golden), neutral (beige), and cool (pink). Many times, if you wear the wrong undertone, your makeup won’t do its job, and will always look like makeup. Of course, we want to have flawless skin, with the illusion that we aren’t using makeup to get it! Also- I find that women sometimes forget to balance their makeup. That means that if you are wearing a very bright and/or heavy eye, you will want to keep your lips and cheeks neutral or muted, and vice versa- if you are wearing a bright full-color lip, keep your eyes more natural and clean. However- I have seen some instances where heavy eyes and lips can work- but it is mostly on a runway! 🙂

What is the best advice that you have ever been given?

The best advice I have ever been given, and that I continue to give my clients, is that it is only makeup! Don’t be afraid to branch out and try new things! You can always fix mistakes or just take it off and start over! 🙂

Where do you see your self in ten years?

In ten years, I would like to see myself with a growing, successful makeup artistry business, perhaps even working in Los Angeles or New York. I would love to one day be able to work New York Fashion Week, and to even work awards shows and red carpet events! I believe that there is no limit to what you can do. Dream big, even when your dreams seem completely unattainable, because you never know!
