Meet talented airbrush makeup artist, Kahley Stalteri!
Tell our readers a little bit about yourself!
From the time I was young, I always found myself to be hanging around my aunt’s beauty salon. It was the place to be! I always knew I had the beauty industry in my blood. In high school, I had a plan to attend cosmetology through my local Boces. I had attended this program my senior year, instead of junior year of high school, and was going to have to attend my second year during college. As I attended cosmetology my senior year of high school, I took on an internship in a pre-school in one of my classes. I found myself falling in love with teaching, and decided to go to my community college for Childhood Education. I did not attend my second year of cosmetology, and transferred to a four year college. I always told myself if I missed the beauty industry I would go back and finish school to obtain my license. Last May, I graduated from college earning a B.S. in Childhood Education 1-6 and Special Education 1-6. After lots of soul searching last summer, I decided that I needed to go back to school. I decided to attend The Salon Professional Academy for Esthetics. Since I started school, I fell in love with makeup. As I like to say, “It’s not an obsession, but a lifestyle.” As of this past year, I have been researching the top skincare, hair care, and cosmetics. I have been able to combine my love for art, teaching, and skincare all in to one field. It has been truly rewarding.
Tell us about your beauty beginnings. How and when did you fall in love with makeup?
I have always had a love for makeup. In high school, I was always doing everyone’s hair and makeup for our high school dances and events. As a child, I was always painting or drawing. I had a love for art. I feel that makeup is just like painting. It’s artwork! After graduation last year, I began to watch a lot of tutorial videos on makeup applications. I was constantly trying new products, and began sharing my information to my friends, family, and clients at school. After some thinking, I decided to create a blog containing helpful information on skincare, hair care, and cosmetics. The link will be listed below.
What made you decide to be a makeup artist? How long have you been working as a makeup artist?
The reason I went back to school was to be able to learn, not only how to apply makeup properly, but to help treat the skin. I believe that being a great makeup artist; you have knowledge about the skin. I want to help people feel beautiful about themselves not only on the outside, but the inside. Makeup gives you that boost of confidence! It can make you feel professional, fun, and sassy. I am very new to the field, and I am learning new things every day. I am very excited about my new journey, and see the doors opening right in front of me. I have several weddings booked for this summer, and can’t wait to see how beautiful my brides will be!
How did you hear about Dinair?
I found Dinair though lots of research! I wanted an airbrush system that was affordable, and the products were outstanding. I love that Dinair has a water-based cosmetic line, in which I can use the products on all of my clients. There is something for everyone! I was lucky enough to be able to travel to NYC, this past April, to attend the International Beauty Show for Hair and Esthetics. I knew that Dinair was going to be at the show, and they were the first place I stopped! I was lucky enough to run into Dina. She made it a point to talk to me, even though she was super busy. She was so sweet and helpful!
What are your favorite Dinair products to use?
My favorite Dinair products are: Brow kit, light bronze, and peach pink lip/blush color! I love the brow kit. When using the stencils with the brow color, the brows come out so natural. They don’t look penciled in. It is my favorite part of the makeup application, besides the final look! The light bronze is a gorgeous sparkly gold. It looks great as a bronzer, highlight, shimmer on the body, or eye shadow. It is very versatile. The peach pink lip/blush color, is a beautiful touch of peachy pink to the cheeks, and looks gorgeous behind the apple of the cheeks. By applying the color a little behind the apples of the cheeks, will help define the cheekbones in a photograph. This color also makes a beautiful lip color as well, applied with a little bit of moist and dewy for a glossy look.
How has Dinair and airbrush makeup benefited you professionally?
Dinair has helped my freelance kit grow tremendously! All of my brides this summer will be receiving an airbrush application for their weddings. Airbrushing has become very popular in the past few years, and gives a flawless application, especially in photos!
How has airbrush makeup changed your beauty routines, personally and professionally?
Airbrush makeup feels very light on the skin, which is great for the summer time. It is also great that you don’t have to use brushes, which can carry bacteria. You won’t be passing on bacteria from your brush to your makeup (contamination), and also to your face. This means fewer breakouts! I also tell my clients that airbrushing will help reduce your chances of obtaining fine lines and wrinkles, or creating more. This is because you don’t have to stretch the skin when applying the airbrush makeup. I recommend airbrush makeup for anyone who has a special event, and will be taking a lot of photographs. Dinair is very quick and easy!
What are some of the most outrageous beauty projects you have completed using Dinair professionally?
I am very new to the business, and hope that I will be able to get into more fantasy art. Right now I am concentrating on special event and bridal makeup. I would love to do zombie makeup using Dinair. One of my favorite TV shows is, The Walking Dead. It has made me really look outside of the box with makeup applications. The makeup artist’s on the show are so creative, and their work is AWESOME! I would love to work as a makeup artist on a television show where cosmetics play such a huge role! I have been doing some practice on different techniques, and applications. They have been so much fun!
What do you find to be the most common mistakes women make with makeup?
I feel that most common mistake women make with their makeup is that they do not know how to match their foundation correctly. By taking swatches of at least 2 to 3 different colors in your shade range, blend a small amount into your jawline, and down onto your neck. Then, in good lighting, you will be able to decide which foundation shade best matches your skin tone, or if you have to mix and match colors. If you are stuck, and can’t decide, go and visit a makeup counter. They will tell you what undertone your skin has, and match you with the correct foundation color.
What is the best advice that you have ever been given?
The best advice I was given is to never forget your passion. Do whatever makes you happy in life. I had to do a lot of soul searching last summer, and had to make a huge decision to go to graduate school or to Esthetics school. My family was such a great support, in telling me to just follow my heart. After going back and forth for about 3 months, I finally decided last August, to go to school for Esthetics. It was the best decision I made for my career!
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
In ten years I see myself as an educator in the field of skincare and cosmetics. I am hoping that with my degree in education and Esthetics certification, I can bring them together into one career! I am hoping that because of my degree and certification it helps open new doors to my career.
Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself or your experiences?
Even though I am new to the makeup industry, I feel that no matter how many years of practice or experiences you have under your belt, we never stop learning. My education will never stop. I hope that someday I can be very successful. I want to look back at my life knowing that I put the time and effort into my career, and know that I tried my hardest.
